After a lot of editing and changing images I have finally come up with my first draft for my first task for creating a school newspaper front cover and contents. 'Ruislip News' is up and running! The name was the first task I gave myself, I thought just some sensible would be more realistic so I went with the boring yet reliable headline of 'Ruislip News'.
The newspaper is a monthly issue and this current issue is the January Edition. I thought it would go well to include a small graphic wishing the reader a happy new year. This is a visual feature that is clearly there for all audiences to see, also used to interact with the reader. This image is used on both the front cover and contents to act as the main house style of my newspaper, this is included with the colour scheme and the consistent font used throughout my newspaper.
The images I have chosen are for specific reasons, to begin with I have stated that the school is welcoming never seen before images of the brand new school hall. This being the main story covering this months edition is the reason for the main image being of that new sports hall. Part of the main task was to include a medium close up of a student from your school on your front cover, I have achieved this by creating a 'Student of the month' award that involves a student picture of the appropriate angle that was required. Again with the timing of the issue, heading towards summer I have included an advertisement that was found in my own schools PE department that advertises Community games which encourages youth to get involved in sport.
And to end with I had added two addition features to my front cover, having a 'Sports Day' count down to inform but also remind all students of when the sports day is going to take place, and especially important as it will be the first within the brand new hall! Offering competitions as well towards the bottom of my front cover with page references that relate to the contents well to allow the readers easy accessibility to which article they wish to see. The colour scheme of my newspaper is light blue, this is due to the colours of my schools logo is this colour and also it fits in well with the main image with the flooring of the new hall also being this colour.
Within my contents page I have layered the images very intentionally over lapping themselves. This is due to the never before seen images having this 'wow' factor of being seen for the first time. It adds a bit of fun to the layout and keeps away from the formal boring view of just listing images next door to each other. One other image is used throughout the newspaper is a wide shot of the back of the school, this is used just to add one more consistent graphic to the pages to let the reader be involved with. I have decided to again continue my house style colour schemes and font in my contents, the name of the newspaper is still there whilst being accompanied by the rhetorical question of 'What will you find inside' again a way of interacting with the reader. The idea of keeping the newspaper layout cheerful and fun is used by the positioning of the text, all central to the page is just a small technique that can cause a big difference in maintaining the attention of the audience.
